When it comes to depositing your money for safekeeping, Nigerian banks do quite a great job. The whole process most times seems so seamless and without delay.

However, when it comes to withdrawing your money when you need it, some things sometimes occur at the bank that are just plain annoying and can frustrate your plans of getting your money.

At every bank in Nigeria, there are three common annoying things that every bank customer sometimes has to deal with when it comes to withdrawing money.

1. ‘Bad Network’.
This one is very common at every bank in Nigeria. You would have been patiently waiting for hours on the queue in the banking hall, only for you to be suddenly told when it reaches your turn that the network is bad. One can’t really blame the banks for this issue though. Many factors could be the cause.

I remember one time this happened to a woman at the bank. The lady cashier behind the counter said to her, “Sorry Ma, the network is really bad. Please hold on.” and she was like, “better make it good if you don’t want trouble for yourself”. She absolutely wasn't having it that day. After almost an hour of shouting in annoyance and frustration, the network luckily got better and she was able to get her money.

I just didn’t understand why, after waiting for hours on the queue, the network decided to wait till it was her own turn to become bad. It definitely had to have been high on some cheap drugs or something.

2. When The ATM Is ‘Temporarily Unable To Dispense Cash’
There is nothing more annoying and frustrating than you walking or travelling a long distance to use a nearby Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) and then queuing for a long period of time, only for you to insert your card when it’s your turn and input your password and the amount you want to withdraw, then the ATM returns a “temporarily unable to dispense cash’ message on the screen.

If that happens to be the only ATM nearby and the next one is many miles away. Without any money on you, what would you do? It’s totally not cool at all. Banks should really do something about it. ATMs should be constantly loaded so that stuff like this don't occur.

I was once at a bank in Lagos, one evening and a lady, out of annoyance and frustration, set out to destroy the ATM with her shoe for temporarily being unable to dispense cash to her.

If not for some people on the queue and the bank’s security guards who held her back, maybe she would have succeeded that day.

3. When The ATM Retracts (‘Swallows’) Your Card.
It's all fun and games until you insert your ATM card into the ATM and it retracts or swallows your card. It can be quite annoying and frustrating.

When an ATM retracts your card, most times, for no reason, for some seconds, You'll simply be confused. Your senses won’t just be able to understand what has happened.

When you eventually do, all you'd feel like doing is just hitting the hell out of the ATM in annoyance and frustration, just like the lady talked about earlier. It’s really a horrible situation to be in.

If your bank is the owner of the ATM and it's within the bank premises, there is a chance of you getting your card, All you need do is to go make a complaint and fill some forms and then your card would be retrieved and returned to you.

However, if your bank is not the owner of the ATM and it's not within or close to the bank premises, brethren, your chances of getting back that ATM card back are almost non-existent.

That’s why I always pray before inserting my card in the ATM so that God can deliver the ATM from the evil spirits that might want to tempt it into retracting or swallowing my card. Prevention is better than cure.
